ABOUT

Brent Curtis

Brent earned a BA in Graphic Design from Western Michigan University. He began working with metal under Jim Starr, a MFA graduate from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1988. The work included producing lamp and chandelier designs from Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. In 1992 Brent started a 15 year career with Myers & Company Architectural Metals in Basalt, Colorado. He worked as a fabricator, blacksmith, AutoCAD detailer and project manager on ornamental metal projects for residences from Aspen to Vail. He owes much of his knowledge of traditional blacksmithing techniques to the teachings of master blacksmith Francis Whitaker.

In 1997 he spent 9 months traveling central Europe as a journeyman. He was able to work for established blacksmithing shops all through Germany as well as in Belgium, Great Britain and Switzerland. There he participated in restoring old works and other traditional blacksmithing projects. Brenton Curtis Metalsmithing LLC was established in 2006.
